49ers HC Kyle Shanahan: 'We have moved on' from Jimmy Garoppolo to Trey Lance

There is no longer any doubt about who will enter preseason as the starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan met with veteran signal-caller Jimmy Garoppolo at some point on Tuesday morning. Following that discussion, Shanahan confirmed to reporters that the franchise has "moved on" to 2021 rookie Trey Lance as its new QB1.

The move is anything but surprising. Reports surfaced last week that the 49ers permitted Garoppolo's agents to seek a trade after the 30-year-old spent all spring and the opening month of summer away from the club as he recovered from March shoulder surgery. Lance ran workouts during organized team activities and mandatory minicamp in Garoppolo's absence.

Shanahan then admitted during a recent appearance on "The TK Show" with The Athletic's Tim Kawakami that it would "surprise" him if Garoppolo practiced with the 49ers during training camp.

Trading Garoppolo may be easier said than done for the Niners, though. Some around the NFL believe the club will have to play Jimmy G. during at least one preseason game so he can prove he's fully recovered from the shoulder setback. The situation could, of course, change if a team loses its quarterback to an injury during training camp or the preseason.

As things stand today, Garoppolo is owed a non-guaranteed salary of $24.2 million and set to count $26.95 million against the salary cap for 2022.
