49ers reportedly want second-round draft pick for QB Jimmy Garoppolo

The first night of the 2022 NFL Draft came and went without the San Francisco 49ers trading either dual-threat All-Pro selection Deebo Samuel or veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

By most accounts, the 49ers want to keep Samuel beyond the 2022 season, as he was the club's offensive most valuable player for the 2021 campaign who tallied a remarkable 1,770 yards from scrimmage and 14 touchdowns.

Garoppolo's status, on the other hand, is more complicated. The 49ers may or may not be ready to name 2021 rookie Trey Lance their new starter this spring or summer, but Jimmy G is still recovering from the March surgery he underwent to repair a torn capsule in his throwing shoulder and presumably won't be able to pass a club physical until some point this summer.

Throughout this offseason, 49ers general manager John Lynch has repeatedly insisted the club could keep Garoppolo on the roster for another season and possibly even have him compete with Lance later this year. Per Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network, at least one source has "emphasized" that the Niners have "entertained holding onto" the 30-year-old "as they try to keep their options open while gauging Trey Lance’s readiness to become the starter."

Additionally, Wilson reports "it would likely cost a second-round draft pick to acquire Garoppolo." Such a trade isn't expected to occur this weekend, as Wilson notes the 49ers are content with "hedging their bets" up through at least the start of training camp.

In short, it seems Garoppolo will remain attached to the 49ers beyond the completion of the draft.
