49ers stars react to update on QB Brock Purdy

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner and star running back Christian McCaffrey reacted Tuesday to the news that quarterback Brock Purdy is cleared to participate in practice coming off elbow surgery.

"Actually, I'm really not surprised," Warner told reporters, according to David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone. "I've seen the way that he's been working. I've been here training all summer, and I know he's been here, and I think in Jacksonville training, too. But I'm not surprised. I know the makeup of how he is since the moment he's gotten here. It only makes sense that he's ahead of schedule. ... But yeah, I'm interested to see how he looks after all his rehab."

It was reported in late June that Purdy traveled to Jacksonville to throw with a quarterback coach and an orthopedic specialist as part of his recovery from the procedure he had on March 10 to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow he suffered in this year's NFC Championship game.

As noted by Nick Wagoner of ESPN, Purdy is on "a pitch count" during the early days of training camp but could be fully cleared as soon as before the club's preseason opener at the Las Vegas Raiders on Aug. 13.

Barring a setback, Purdy should start the Week 1 matchup at the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 10.

"I think everybody was fired up to hear that," McCaffrey added about Purdy's updated status. "It's a testament to him. He's put in so much work. We've kind of seen it from outside the building, but all he's done is work. And so the fact that he's ready to go is exciting for all of us."

Purdy won all five of his regular season starts as a rookie and completed 67.1% of 170 pass attempts for 1,374 yards with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions across nine total appearances before the playoffs.

2021 first-round draft pick Trey Lance and free-agency signing Sam Darnold will compete this summer for the right to serve as Purdy's primary backup. The winner of that battle will start against Pittsburgh if the 23-year-old can't face a live defense by Sept. 10 for any reason.
