Kyle Shanahan says Purdy will throw two out of every three days initially, and he'll take the first rep the days he's out there.
Furthermore, Shanahan said the former "Mr. Irrelevant" will be taking first team reps when he's on the field this summer.
The Niners also have 2021 third overall pick Trey Lance recovering from the broken ankle that he suffered early during the 2022 campaign and offseason acquisition Sam Darnold in the mix for the backup job. Brandon Allen is currently in line to be the fourth-string signal-caller.
Shanahan said Tuesday that Lance looked "healthier" and his feet "look better."
Jimmy Garoppolo signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in March after six seasons with San Francisco, and the team replaced him by signing Darnold to a one-year deal shortly after.
Purdy underwent surgery in March to repair a torn UCL in his elbow. The 23-year-old went down with the injury during the NFC championship loss against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Purdy went 5-0 in the regular season last year, completing 67.1% of his passes for 1,374 yards, 13 touchdowns and four interceptions in nine games, while posting a 107.3 quarterback rating. He continued his perfect run in the Niners' wild card and divisional round victories before the defeat against Philadelphia and finished the playoffs 41-for-63 with 569 passing yards and three touchdowns against zero interceptions.
