Aaron Rodgers addresses Jets future, organizational issues

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers spoke with reporters during an end-of-season address on Monday and reiterated he wants to give the organization more than just one full season of playing time. 

"This is not a one-year, in my mind," Rodgers declared, per Phillip Martinez of SNY. "It's a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately. And I'm going to have to go out and prove I can still play at a high level, but I would like this to be more than just this year."

Rodgers officially joined the Jets from the Green Bay Packers via trade in April 2023 and then accepted a significant pay cut this past summer to help Gang Green build around him through at least 2024. That, however, was before the 40-year-old went down with a torn Achilles just four snaps into September's regular-season opener. 

The future Hall of Famer suggested last month he wanted to feature for the Jets for "at least two years" and considered the 2023 season "kind of a lost" campaign. Meanwhile, Jets owner Woody Johnson is expected to retain head coach Robert Saleh, offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and general manager Joe Douglas largely because they all have Rodgers' support following a 7-10 season. 

Rodgers indicated on Monday everyone involved could be fighting to save their jobs beginning this coming September. 

"We’re all going to be on the hot seat next year," Rodgers added during his comments. "It’s going to be an important year for all of us. I love that. We should approach that every single year. If you have a down year, there’s going to be people calling for you to move on -- especially when you’re 40 years old. I'm going to go out there and play as well as I can and if I have the season I'm capable of having, if we have the success I know we’re capable of having, that stuff takes care of itself."

Rodgers also seemed to put certain individuals within the Jets on notice as it pertains to what he does and does not want to be associated with the franchise throughout the spring and summer months. 

“Anything in this building that we're doing that has nothing to do with winning needs to be assessed,” Rodgers remarked, via Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic. "Everything that we do has to have a purpose ... the bull---- that has nothing to do with winning has to get out of the building."

Rodgers offered similar comments about "a problem with the organization" in December shortly after it was reported that signal-caller Zach Wilson was reluctant at that time to resume starting duties in Rodgers' absence. Wilson likely has taken his last snap with the club, but Rodgers seemingly hasn't forgotten what was said and written about the 24-year-old.
