Bears' injury concerns could shift team priorities
The Bears suffered more than a loss in the standings Sunday. Leading receiver Darnell Mooney and safety Eddie Jackson, a team captain, suffered injuries that knocked each out of a loss to the Jets.
Just before halftime, Jackson went down on the Jets’ 30-yard-line, leaving Garrett Wilson uncovered for a 54-yard touchdown. Jackson, who could not put weight on his left foot, was carted to the locker room. He may have been another non-contact victim of the infamous MetLife Stadium turf. He quickly was ruled out for the remainder of the game.
Mooney was blocking out wide for David Montgomery on the Bears' second drive after halftime when Jets safety Jordan Whitehead rolled up on his ankle. Like Jackson, Mooney was unable to put weight on his injured left leg. The Bears quickly announced that he was doubtful to return.
Per CBS Sports, the Bears fear Mooney will need season-ending ankle surgery.
Losing its leading receiver would be a huge blow to an offense that already lacks playmakers. Mooney has 40 receptions for 493 yards and two touchdowns.
Jackson’s injury status is unclear. He entered the game tied for third in the NFL with four interceptions.
Speaking to the media after the game, head coach Matt Eberflus said: “When you lose the production of those guys, number one that always hurts. And also the leadership part of it. Those guys have been great in the locker room. "
The Bears went into the game already missing quarterback Justin Fields, who has been dealing with a shoulder injury.
With the team at 3-9 and key starters out, the Bears' outlook and goals may shift.
Per Tankathon, the Bears have the No. 2 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. The front office could determine that a high draft position and the long-term health of Jackson, Fields and Mooney are more important than victories the rest of this season.
