The Bears on Saturday signed linebacker DeMarquis Gates to the 53-man roster for the game with the Cleveland Browns.
Gates had been on the practice squad.
They have been trying to get linebacker Noah Sewell through a knee injury and he returned to play last week after missing two games with it, but has had the situation aggravated.
Sewell was declared out for this game with the knee injury and it will be worth watching to see if they place him on season-ending injured reserve with only three games remaining after Sunday.
Sewell, the fifth-round Bears pick this year, has nine tackles and a forced fumble in 11 games, mostly in a special teams role as he is playing behind strongside linebacker Jack Sanborn, middle linebacker Tremaine Edmunds and weakside linebacker T.J. Edwards.
Gates has been in three games each of the last two seasons while spending most of his time on the Bears practice squad. He mas made two tackles and a fumble recovery.
