Buffalo Bills (3-1) head coach Sean McDermott confirmed Monday that star cornerback Tre’Davious White suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in the 48-20 Week 4 win over the Miami Dolphins (3-1) Sunday.

The injury occurred on a non-contact play during the third quarter while White was covering Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill. White, 28, was coming out of his backpedal before he went down to the turf. White, in tears carrying a towel over his head, was taken off the field via a cart.

“He personifies what it is to be a Buffalo Bill,” McDermott said Sunday, via NFL.com. “His family is tremendous. And he works as hard as anybody I’ve ever been around. And I love him. I mean, to see him on that field, the way he was hurting, is hard. It’s hard to watch. But I’m so proud of the team and the way they rallied around him. And I know, like I said earlier, I know that he will rebound. He’s just, he’s too tough.”

White posted three tackles, a pass deflection, and a quarterback hit in the victory over Miami. In four games this season, White compiled 12 tackles (10 solo), two pass defenses and one interception. The 2019 All-Pro selection previously suffered a torn ACL during the Thanksgiving game against the New Orleans Saints in 2021. He returned exactly 52 weeks later in the Thanksgiving game versus the Detroit Lions the following season.

Bills teammates express sadness over Tre’Davious White injury

Receiver Stefon Diggs, his Bills teammate over the past four seasons, expressed his sadness over White’s injury after the game.

“This game, people really don’t understand, weighs on you,” Diggs said. “With everything he’s already been through, it’s kind of tough. Keep him in your prayers. It’s easy to say it’s unfortunate, but football means the world to him. You can tell by how he works, how he grinds, how he approaches each and every day. He really doesn’t care about the limelight; he cares about being the player and teammate he can be. … At a time like this, it’s rough.”

White’s injury is a devastating blow to Buffalo’s defense, which has surrendered an AFC-low 13.8 points per game. Fortunately for the Bills, veteran edge rusher Von Miller will practice this week, opening the 21-day window in which the team can activate him off the physically unable to perform list (PUP). The 34-year-old is recovering from a torn ACL he sustained against Detroit last Thanksgiving.
