Bills defensive coordinator taking 2023 season off from football

The Buffalo Bills announced on Tuesday morning that defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier will not be returning for the 2023 season as he plans to take a year off from coaching.

He plans to return in 2024, but it remains to be seen if that will be with the Bills or another NFL team.

The Bills did not immediately announce a replacement or say who will call the team's defense during the 2023 season.

Frazier has been a constant on the Bills coaching staff since the start of the 2017 season, serving as the team's defensive coordinator for the past six years. His defenses have typically fared very well, and at times near the top of the league. Buffalo has been in the top two in points allowed in three of the past four seasons and finished in the top six in yards against in four of the past five years.

The 2022 team finished second and sixth in points and yards against respectively, despite having significant injuries at all levels of the defense.

The Bills pointed out that since the start of the 2017 season the franchise ranks third in points per game against (allowing just 20 per game), first in yards against per game (315), first in passing yards against per game (202), first in passing touchdowns allowed (107), and is second in terms of interceptions (99) and second in total takeaways (158).

That is a pretty good run for Frazier in charge of the Bills' defense.

Prior to serving as the Bills' defensive coordinator, Frazier was also a defensive coordinator in Cincinnati, Minnesota and Tampa Bay, while also spending parts of four seasons as the head coach of the Vikings.
