Broncos legend 'amicably' splits from organization

The newest era of Denver Broncos football won't include a familiar face.

9News in Denver reports John Elway "amicably departed from the Broncos in a formal capacity" as the franchise attempts to turn the page with new ownership and a new head coach in Sean Payton.

For the past 12 years, Elway has been a part of the front office in some fashion, first as Director of Player Personnel in 2011 and then as executive VP of football operations and general manager from 2012-20 with the team winning Super Bowl 50 in 2016. In 2021, George Paton took over as the team's GM while Elway remained in charge of football operations.

Last season was his first as a paid outside consultant.

Of course, all that followed a legendary 16-year playing career for Elway as the franchise's quarterback from 1983-1998. He won the 1987 MVP award and back-to-back Super Bowls a decade later in 1997 and 1998, his final two years in the league.

Elway expressed no ill will toward the organization when interviewed by 9News and stressed he would be happy to provide assistance in an unofficial capacity in the future if needed.

"I've enjoyed the relationship with the Broncos for a long, long time... I just wanted the flexibility. They're in great hands. I still plan on being around to watch and be a resource ... if I can," Elway told the network.

Outside of Elway's stints with the organization—both as a player and executive—the franchise hasn't experienced much success. From 1960-1982, Denver had three playoff appearances. And during Elway's absence after retiring as a player from 1999-2010, the Broncos reached the playoffs four times with only one postseason victory. 

All that suggests the front office might want to keep Elway's number on speed dial.
