Colin Cowherd compares Cowboys' Dak Prescott to Vikings' Kirk Cousins

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones raised eyebrows when he teased on Thursday that he'd welcome a quarterback controversy if it meant backup Cooper Rush excelling as starter Dak Prescott continues his recovery from the thumb injury he initially suffered during the Week 1 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that will likely keep him sidelined at least another couple of weeks.

Rush played well enough to help the Cowboys earn a 20-17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals this past Sunday and improve to 1-1 on the young season, but Fox Sports personality Colin Cowherd instead focused on Prescott during Wednesday's edition of "The Herd with Colin Cowherd" program.

"There is one thing in Dallas you can’t do… You cannot criticize Dak Prescott. Nobody has ever been coddled like Dak Prescott," Cowherd declared, per Wil Leitner of iHeartRadio. "If you criticize Dak Prescott, the fanboys come out of the woodwork.

"Dak Prescott is the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys and makes $40 million a year, and cannot beat good teams. Dak Prescott versus playoff teams in his career is 12-21 and he’s had more than enough weapons before this year and a great o-line. 12-21? What is he, Kirk Cousins on 'Monday Night Football?' That’s who I’ve compared him to for the last two years. Their numbers are identical. The difference is you mock Kirk Cousins and you coddle Dak Prescott. They are the same player, one is just more popular. One is cooler.

"You’re the quarterback of 'America’s Team' making $40 million and you can’t beat good teams. Who was the quarterback in Dallas before Dak? It was Tony Romo, who actually occasionally beat playoff teams with a terrible offensive line most of his career in Dallas, and you crushed him weekly. Tony Romo couldn’t catch a break in Dallas."

Romo famously lost his job to Prescott in 2016 when a back injury allowed the then-rookie to enter the lineup. Jones suggesting on Thursday a similar occurrence regarding the Rush-Prescott dynamic could happen this fall is good for a laugh ahead of Dallas' "Monday Night Football" game at the 2-0 New York Giants, but it's more likely that Prescott will return ahead of schedule to feature against the Washington Commanders on Oct. 2.

Rush will start against the Giants after he connected on 19-of-31 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown in the matchup versus Cincinnati.
