The Indianapolis Colts just can’t seem to catch a break in 2021.
The main injury story surrounds Carson Wentz and his two sprained ankles.
But a whole list of Colts have suffered one ailment or another this year and a terrible blow has struck the team this week.
Young safety Julian Blackmon tore his Achilles in practice and is now out for the season.
That is a scary injury for any athlete who relies on their speed and the long road to recovery begins immediately for the 23-year-old.
A Crushing Blow
Blackmon was a third-round pick in 2020 and played in 15 games as a rookie.
He has started all six for far in 2021 and was already at 34 tackles on the year.
Alas, he must now wait until 2022 to return.
The good news is that he is still young and if his recovery goes as planned, there is no reason to believe he will show a major drop in abilities.
The only fear is how his speed and explosiveness look after such a brutal injury.
Fighting Through The Injuries
The Colts improved to 2-4 on the year with a win over the Houston Texans in Week 6.
The Indianapolis defense is only allowing roughly 22 points per game this season, while the offense has been more of the problem with an average of just over 23 points per game.
Losing Blackmon leaves a hole in the secondary and the Colts may want to think about making a trade.
At 2-4 they are only two games behind the Tennessee Titans in the AFC South division.
In general, some AFC contenders are struggling this season, so 2-4 is not a death sentence.
While Blackmon’s absence is huge, the Colts will still go as far as Wentz takes them this season.
Him playing through injuries may represent a bigger story than anyone who will miss time.
