Colts QB Carson Wentz to get foot surgery, miss up to 12 weeks

It seems the worst fears of the Indianapolis Colts have been realized.

Per Kevin Patra of the NFL's website, Indianapolis coach Frank Reich told reporters Monday that quarterback Carson Wentz will undergo surgery to repair the foot injury he first suffered last week. It was learned Friday that the 28-year-old was out indefinitely because of the issue but was trying to avoid surgery. Instead, Wentz will now be sidelined anywhere from five to 12 weeks. That timeline obviously puts his status for the start of the regular season in doubt.

2020 fourth-round draft pick Jacob Eason is currently next up on the Indianapolis depth chart and would start if the Colts had a game today. The club also signed veteran Brett Hundley over the weekend and has 2021 sixth-round selection Sam Ehlinger on the roster.

Wentz officially joined the Colts via a trade from the Philadelphia Eagles in March to reunite with Reich and offensive assistant Press Taylor, both of whom coached the signal-caller in the City of Brotherly Love. Since Friday, the Colts have been linked with current Chicago Bears quarterback and former Wentz backup Nick Foles in trade rumors, but it's unclear if Reich and company feel the need to part with assets to acquire a proven commodity at the position ahead of preseason action.

The Colts play their first exhibition game against the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 15.
