Concerning report emerges about Jets' Zach Wilson

New York Jets third-year quarterback Zach Wilson hasn't played since he was benched during the Week 11 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Nov. 19.

It appears Wilson may not take another snap for the organization.

Zack Rosenblatt and Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported Monday that Wilson "is reluctant to step back into the starting role" after head coach Robert Saleh played both Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian during Sunday's 13-8 loss to the Atlanta Falcons that dropped Gang Green to 4-8 on what's become a disappointing season for the franchise.

"The organization is discussing next steps," Rosenblatt and Russini added.

Saleh benched Wilson multiple times last season, and the 24-year-old was supposed to spend the 2023 campaign sitting behind future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers. Those plans changed when Rodgers went down with a torn Achilles in Week 1, and Wilson largely failed to impress while starting for what was hoped this past summer to be a Super Bowl contender.

According to ESPN stats, Wilson began Monday ranked last in the NFL with a 30.3 adjusted QBR on the season. He's 33rd with a 73.8 passer rating for the campaign, and he recorded six touchdown passes with seven interceptions over fewer than 10 completed games.

Additionally, the Jets finished the weekend ranked 31st in the NFL with an average of 260.1 offensive yards per game and 30th with 14.3 points per contest. The ESPN Football Power Index gives the Jets zero chance of making the playoffs.

Wilson is under contract through the 2024 season, and it seems unlikely the club will exercise the fifth-year option attached to his rookie deal next spring. It remains to be seen if he, Boyle or Siemian will start when New York hosts the 7-5 Houston Texans this coming Sunday.
