Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy responds to Jerry Jones' recent comments on Dan Quinn

The head-coaching shenanigans involving the Dallas Cowboys roll on.

Head coach Mike McCarthy responded Tuesday to comments from outspoken team owner Jerry Jones, who insinuated in a recent radio interview he could see current defensive coordinator Dan Quinn taking over as head coach one day. Quinn interviewed for a number of open head-coaching positions this offseason before deciding to stay in Dallas as part of McCarthy's staff.

With McCarthy already clearly in the hot seat after yet another underwhelming season, Jones eluding to Quinn staying in Dallas to take over as HC had to sting -- especially with many outlets speculating Jones wants to bring newly-retired Sean Payton to Dallas.

The Cowboys head coach responded to Jones' comments about Quinn in the most professional way possible earlier this week in an interview with Rich Eisen.

"We talked about him staying here long before he ever took the interview[s]. Now, obviously, when he took the interview[s] and this narrative broke out, in reflection to the relationship Dan and I do have, he said, 'Hey man, I'm not comfortable with this narrative. If you really feel like I need to take one of these jobs, just be honest with me.' We kind of laughed about it, and I just said, 'Dan, 10 to 12 years ago I'd tell you to please get the hell out of here. I don't want to deal with this.'

"But the reality is I'm about winning, he's about winning and the best thing for the Cowboys is for Dan Quinn to be here. It was his decision and his decision alone, but I clearly wanted him to know that from the start of all of that, I wanted him here. It's in the best interest of us winning."

It seems pretty evident from McCarthy's thorough answer there's no bad blood between him and Quinn.

Whether he's still on good terms with Jones after the comments and subsequent media circus isn't quite as clear.
