Cowboys HOF WR floats former teammate as candidate to replace Mike McCarthy

Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin said Thursday that he could see former teammate (and fellow Hall of Famer) Deion Sanders as the next head coach for "America's Team."

Irvin offered the hot take on Thursday's edition of "Undisputed" on FS1, saying that Sanders' long-standing relationship with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones could seal the deal.

There are obviously two huge obstacles standing in the way of "Prime Time" returning to "Big D."

First, Mike McCarthy still has two seasons left on his five-year contract that he signed when he was hired as the leader in Dallas in January 2020. However, with the Cowboys continuing to fall short in the playoffs, another disappointment in 2023 could result in McCarthy being let go.

Additionally, Sanders is only one game into his new gig as head coach with the University of Colorado and has already taken college football by storm, courtesy of the Buffaloes season-opening upset of TCU. The former Pro Bowl cornerback inked a five-year deal (which has a window for contract negotiations after the third season) with Colorado over the winter and said in June that he never wanted to coach in the NFL.

Sanders spent five of his 14 NFL seasons alongside Irvin and Jones in Dallas from 1995-99, helping lead the Cowboys to their most recent championship in Super Bowl XXX over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

For now, it's Jones and McCarthy running the show in Dallas as they prepare for Week 1's road matchup against the New York Giants on "Sunday Night Football" at 8:20 p.m. ET.

"Coach Prime" brings the Buffaloes into their first home game of the season at noon on Saturday against Nebraska (0-1).
