Cowboys part ways with six assistants in major coaching-staff shakeup

Following the Dallas Cowboys disappointing exit in the NFC divisional round of the playoffs on Sunday, sweeping changes were expected.

Many of those changes came on Thursday when the team parted ways with six assistant coaches — Rob Davis (assistant head coach), Joe Philbin (offensive line), Skip Peete (running backs), George Edwards (senior defensive assistant), Kyle Valero (quality control/analytics) and Leon Lett (assistant defensive line) — signaling the start of a major facelift for 2023.

“These were difficult decisions to make because of the great respect I have for each of them as a coach and person of character, combined with the experiences we've all gone through together,” Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy told reporters on Thursday. “This is the hardest part of the business and we wish them nothing but the best."

McCarthy admitted that more changes could be coming for the coaching staff in the coming days. Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, who withdrew his name Thursday for consideration for head-coaching vacancies, is safe.

It’s not known if offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, who interviewed but did not get the Carolina Panthers head-coaching job, has the same job security as Quinn.

"My evaluation process is still going on,” McCarthy continued. “We'll continue to talk. I'll hope to get together with Kellen as early as (Friday). … Kellen Moore, just like the rest of the coaches, will be evaluated.”
