With training camp underway for the Dallas Cowboys in Oxnard, Calif., fans are getting a closer look at the team ahead of the season. However, they will have to wait a little bit longer to see second-round rookie tight end Luke Schoonmaker.
Schoonmaker closed out OTAs for the Cowboys in a walking boot after being diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, which was labeled a "slight inflammation" by the team.
Well, on Thursday we got an update from Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy, who was asked if he believes the rookie will make be ready and able to go before the end of training camp.
"I'm definitely hopeful of that," McCarthy said. "He's had some good workouts as of late. He's definitely making progress but I don't have a timeline."
Of course, there are plenty of reasons to look of when it comes to seeing Schoomaker in the new "Texas Coast Offense" being implemented in Dallas. In his final two seasons at Michigan he hauled in 52 receptions for 583 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
Until he does return, though, the Cowboys can look to the other three tight ends in their "Four Horsemen'' stable. Those three of course being Jake Ferguson, Peyton Hendershot and Sean McKeon.
Those three, plus Schoonmaker when he makes his return from the injury list, will be tasked with replacing the loss of Dalton Schultz in free agency.
Before his injury in OTAs, Schoonmaker got some work in with quarterback Dak Prescott. The talented rookie playmaker offers a lot of potential and could eventually play a key role in Dallas' offense.
Even though he's missing the start of training camp, there will be a role for him when he does return - which McCarthy and the rest of the Cowboys will be coming very "Schoon."
