When the Las Vegas Raiders were dealing with injuries to quarterbacks Gardner Minshew and Aidan O'Connell, they took a chance and signed Desmond Ridder off the Arizona Cardinals' practice squad.
He eventually got a chance to start in Week 15 against the Atlanta Falcons, but he struggled and threw two interceptions in the loss. The Raiders decided against bringing him back this offseason, and he's been sitting in free agency for months.
While there isn't a team ready to sign him yet, there is one team taking a closer look at Ridder. According to 9News' Mike Klis , the Denver Broncos have invited Ridder to try out at their rookie minicamp.
Many of the 60 players working out will be rookies, but there will be plenty of veterans, including Ridder. The Broncos already employ a former Raiders backup quarterback in Jarrett Stidham.
With the Broncos already having Bo Nix and Stidham, Ridder's best hope is that he can look better than Sam Ehlinger. It's also possible that Denver might want four quarterbacks on the roster heading into training camp.
Ridder hasn't played up to expectations when the Falcons named as a starter in his second season. That said, he's a solid athlete at quarterback and can make plays with his legs.
Nix is the unquestioned starter for the Broncos going forward, and Stidham is a high-end backup. Head coach Sean Payton is one of the best developers of quarterbacks in the NFL, so even riding the bench in Denver for a season could be beneficial for a player like Ridder.
