Former MVP praises Cowboys for Mike McCarthy decision

One-time Most Valuable Player and current CBS Sports NFL analyst Boomer Esiason explained during Thursday's edition of the WFAN "Boomer and Gio" program why he believes Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones keeping Mike McCarthy as his head coach is the right move for the organization.

"I was actually happy to hear it," Esiason said about Jones' decision, per Ryan Chichester of Audacy. "I often talk about stability…and the sewer pit of social media can affect everything and everybody if you allow it to. Sometimes these owners have to take a step back and take a look at what success they’ve had with their head coaches, and then realize not to be emotional and not get caught up in the idiocy and nonsense on social media."

Even before the Cowboys suffered an embarrassing 48-32 wild-card playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers at home this past Sunday, NFL insiders and analysts routinely linked Dallas with former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. While Belichick famously guided the Patriots to six Super Bowl championships, McCarthy has lost three of four playoff games during his Dallas tenure that began in 2020.

Individuals throughout the sports world such as ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky and Fox Sports personality Skip Bayless ripped Jones for sticking with McCarthy following this past weekend's result:

Esiason clearly disagrees with such takes.

"Sometimes you just have to take a step back and say, 'There is only one Super Bowl winner, you never know who that’s gonna be…and then you sometimes run into a hot team and wind up getting blasted,'" Esiason added on Thursday. "And maybe your best player has his worst game. That’s what happened with the Cowboys and (quarterback) Dak Prescott."

Prescott tossed two costly interceptions against Green Bay but can't be blamed for the fact that the Dallas defense surrendered 143 rushing yards and three scores on the ground in that matchup. The Cowboys theoretically could move on from both Prescott and McCarthy next winter, but Jones will first give that duo another chance to guide Dallas to at least a conference title game appearance.
