Former NFL QB rips Jerry Jones for retaining Mike McCarthy

Jon Machota of The Athletic noted Jones would probably retain McCarthy to prevent a coaching staff overhaul, aligning with the organization's recent tendency to avoid risks.  

To be fair to McCarthy, he's helped the Cowboys tally 12 or more regular-season wins for three straight seasons for the second time in franchise history. Per CBS Sports, Dallas last did this from 1992-95. However, those teams won three Super Bowls in four years. 

McCarthy has only one playoff win in four seasons with Dallas. In a 48-32 home wild-card round loss to Green Bay, the Packers became the first No. 7 seed to advance in the postseason since the NFL expanded to a 14-team format in 2020.

Despite the playoff failures, McCarthy — who is entering the final year of his contract — insists the team is on the verge of snapping its 28-year championship drought. 

"We have established a championship program. It's just not a world championship yet," McCarthy said Thursday, via ESPN's Ed Werder. "I know how to win. We will get over that threshold. I have total confidence, and that's why I am standing here today."

Clearly, it's Super Bowl or bust for McCarthy and the Cowboys next season. Otherwise, they'll regret passing on an opportunity to hire candidates like Bill Belichick and Mike Vrabel.
