Giants' Daniel Jones talks Tommy DeVito, uncertain future

Injured New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones offered high praise for undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito after DeVito guided the club to a 31-19 win at the Washington Commanders this past Sunday.

Per Ben Krimmel of SNY, Jones said during a Tuesday appearance on the FanDuel TV "Up & Adams" program that DeVito has "got a swagger to him" even though DeVito is only playing this fall because both Jones and primary backup Tyrod Taylor are sidelined with physical setbacks.

"He’s confident, but super hard-working, good dude who’s come in and done everything he could to improve and continue to grow, and that’s why he’s been ready for this last few games," Jones added about DeVito. "It’s been fun working with him in the room and he’s a good player."

DeVito took nine sacks against Washington but also completed 18-of-26 passes for 246 yards and three touchdowns in the victory that improved the Giants to 3-8. He'll remain atop the depth chart for at least this coming Sunday's home game against the 2-8 New England Patriots.

As for Jones, he suffered a season-ending torn ACL on Nov. 5 and has become the subject of numerous rumors and reports since the Giants can escape the four-year contract he signed this past March as soon as after next season. Coming off Week 11, the Giants hold the rights for the fifth overall pick in next year's draft that will feature USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams and Drake Maye of the North Carolina Tar Heels entering the NFL.

"How that all works out is down the road a ways and I don’t have a ton of control over it," Jones told show host Kay Adams about his uncertain future. "I'm just focused on doing what I can do to get back."

Jones revealed he's looking at "about an eight to nine to 10-month recovery period" after he undergoes surgery on Wednesday. Such a timeline suggests the 26-year-old may not be ready to play by Week 1 next September.
