Tommy DeVito addresses fans wanting Giants to lose for draft pick

Undrafted rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito understands some New York Giants fans are already thinking about the 2024 NFL Draft and, thus, aren't thrilled that DeVito guided the club to a 31-19 win at the Washington Commanders on Sunday afternoon.

"I’m sure I’m going to hear about it," DeVito said about such supporters following the victory that improved the Giants to 3-8, per Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post. "My job is to come here and play football to the highest of my ability and help put my team in situations to win."

DeVito is a native of Cedar Grove, New Jersey, and is only playing this fall because starter Daniel Jones and primary backup Tyrod Taylor are sidelined with injuries. Against Washington, DeVito was sacked a whopping nine times but nevertheless completed 18-of-26 passes for 246 yards and three touchdowns en route to earning the first win of his pro career.

While more than a few Giants fans are hoping DeVito stacks losses through Week 18 so that the club can draft either USC Trojans signal-caller Caleb Williams or Drake Maye of the North Carolina Tar Heels to replace Jones atop the depth chart as soon as next summer, it was reported as recently as last week that "some key people in the organization still have faith in Jones and believe their 26-year-old franchise quarterback can still be their long-term answer."

The Giants can escape the four-year contract Jones signed this past March after next season.

As for Giants players, they seem ready and happy to give their all for DeVito across the final six games of what's become a disappointing campaign for just about everybody associated with the organization.

"It’s just great to see him go out there and compete and just go have fun," Giants cornerback Darnay Holmes said about DeVito during a postgame chat with Cayden Steele of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. "That’s what I love most about DeVito. No matter what’s going on, he’s going to have fun and you’re going to see that."

The Giants next host the 2-8 New England Patriots this coming Sunday before New York enters its bye. As of early Monday afternoon, oddschecker listed the DeVito-led Giants as 3.5-point underdogs against the Patriots.

DeVito may use that line as bulletin board material as he attempts to push the Giants further down the draft order.
