Giants defend Daniel Jones after shots from 49ers

Members of the New York Giants defended teammate Daniel Jones after individuals associated with the San Francisco 49ers took some shots at the quarterback following New York's 30-12 loss at San Francisco on Sept. 21.

"D.J. is a tough guy," Giants wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins told Bob Brookover of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. "He doesn’t need people telling him, 'You got this, don’t believe what they say,' but naturally as a teammate, some people are going to go up to him and say stuff like that."

Jones faced pressure from pass-rushers throughout the "Thursday Night Football" encounter held at Levi's Stadium and completed 22-of-32 passes for only 137 yards with no touchdowns and an interception.

Following the contest, an unnamed 49ers defensive player told Michael Silver of The San Francisco Chronicle that Jones "did not want to throw the ball" and that everything he delivered "was a checkdown." Others bashed the Giants for signing Jones in March to a four-year contract worth up to $160M that one San Francisco player referred to as "ridiculous."

Hodgins insisted Jones hasn't lost the locker room three weeks into the season.

"We don’t believe any of the comments they were saying and I think to D.J. that’s what matters the most," Hodgins added. "They’re going to say what they say and D.J. is a tough player. He’s going to battle through it and he’s going to bounce back."

According to ESPN stats, Jones began Friday ranked 21st in the NFL among qualified players with a 46.8 adjusted QBR on the season. He's thrown two touchdown passes and four interceptions but is third among quarterbacks with 107 rushing yards.

"Everything hasn’t been perfect in his career, but he’s done a great job of being resilient and bouncing back and he continues to keep fighting," backup signal-caller Tyrod Taylor said about Jones.

Jones and the 1-2 Giants will look to put the Week 3 defeat in the past when they host the 2-1 Seattle Seahawks this coming Monday night.
