Giants haven't started contract talks with Daniel Jones

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones played the best football of his career in 2022. Now a free agent, he is due for a payday.

Giants GM Joe Schoen wants Jones to be New York's QB, but the sides have not started negotiations.

“With any negotiation you try to move closer and that’s what we’ll try to do next week,” the GM said, per Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News.

If Jones is to leave, several teams could vie for his services.

The Colts have several glaring needs, with quarterback at the top of the list. Jones, who's only 25, could be an option to get Indianapolis off the veteran QB treadmill.

With the fourth overall pick in the NFL Draft, the Colts could draft a QB or trade the pick in a package to the Bears, who hold the No. 1 pick. Then Indianapolis could select consensus No. 1 college QB Bryce Young of Alabama.

The Panthers desperately need a quarterback. Carolina, which recently hired former NFL QB Frank Reich as head coach, holds the ninth overall pick. That's probably too low to get one of the premier college QBs (Young, Ohio State's C.J. Stroud or Kentucky's Will Levis).

With the retirement of Tom Brady, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be the team that makes the most sense. They have standout wideouts in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin --  both are better than any wide receiver Jones passed to in 2022.

If Jones and the Giants can't come to terms, New York could put the franchise tag on him. The franchise tag figure for a QB is $32.4 million a year, but under those circumstances Jones would still be able to negotiate with other teams. The exclusive tag figure hasn't been announced yet, but is expected to be around $45 million for a quarterback, per Fox Sports.

The big question for New York: Is he worth that money?
