Giants icon loves latest Daniel Jones update

In a mock draft published on Monday, ESPN's Matt Miller reported that "rumors swirling at the Senior Bowl among agents" suggested that the New York Giants "are more likely to add a veteran free agent quarterback to compete with Daniel Jones" this offseason than use a high draft pick to land a to-be rookie signal-caller.

Giants icon and CBS Sports NFL analyst Tiki Barber is a big fan of that plan.

"That is a great decision," Barber said about Miller's update during the Monday edition of the WFAN "Evan and Tiki" program. "The Giants are sitting at No. 6. There is a lot of talent available…they can take an offensive lineman, a tight end, or they can move out of that pick and go down if anyone wants some of those top-end players."

The Giants signed Jones to a four-year, $160M contract last March, but he then tossed only two touchdown passes and six interceptions across fewer than six full games before he suffered a torn ACL on Nov. 5. It was reported last week that the Giants won't restructure Jones' deal because they can opt out of it as soon as next offseason.

While it's hoped Jones will recover from his latest setback in time to play in Week 1 this coming September, he's missed a total of nine games since the 2021 season because of neck injuries.

Jones helped the 2022 Giants earn a road playoff win, but the 2023 squad went 6-11. Giants general manager Joe Schoen may let star running back Saquon Barkley reach free agency in March, and it's thought that New York head coach Brian Daboll could be on the hot seat assuming that former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick remains a free agent through the fall.

"The Giants have so many holes," Barber added on Monday. "...You can’t waste a premium pick on a quarterback this year, especially with Daniel Jones on this roster."

Miller predicted that the Giants would select Washington Huskies wide receiver Rome Odunze with the sixth overall draft pick. Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports believes New York could target Notre Dame Fighting Irish offensive tackle Joe Alt, while CBS' Chris Trapasso linked the Giants with LSU Tigers receiver Malik Nabers.
