Giants legend addresses noteworthy Saquon Barkley comments

New York Giants legend Tiki Barber believes Big Blue star running back Saquon Barkley revealed Thursday he understands he's in the final months of his stint with the organization that started on the opening night of the 2018 NFL Draft.

"I don't think he's changed his desire, I just think he knows what's been offered to him," Barber said about Barkley during the WFAN "Evan and Tiki" program, per Lou DiPietro of Audacy. "...If someone offers him a better deal, I think he's gone."

Barkley somewhat surprisingly told reporters ahead of this Sunday's game at the 4-6 Washington Commanders he realizes "loyalty means nothing" and knows that "no matter how loyal, no matter how committed you are, it’s a business at the end of the day."

The 26-year-old failed to secure a long-term contract to his liking when his rights were reserved via the franchise tag earlier this year and ultimately signed what is essentially an adjusted tag to play for the Giants this season. That agreement doesn't prevent general manager Joe Schoen from again tagging Barkley in March 2024, but such a move seems unlikely less than a week before Thanksgiving.

The 2-8 Giants could draft a replacement for injured starting quarterback Daniel Jones this coming spring as part of a roster rebuild. As for Barkley, he has a worrisome and lengthy injury history, missed three games this fall due to an ankle problem and plays a position worth a minimal investment regarding the salary cap for a non-contending club.

Barkley repeatedly made it known before and after he reported to the Giants during the summer that he wanted to retire as a one-club man. With his employer now allegedly "tanking" through Week 18, Barkley may desire a change of scenery assuming he reaches free agency when the new league year opens.

"I think he's loved being here and having the success that he's had here," Barber added about Barkley. "I'm not gonna rewrite his history, but that answer didn't sound like he's only thinking about staying with the Giants. Prior to this year, that’s all you heard: 'I want to be a Giant for life.' This is the first time I’ve heard him sound like that."

Giants co-owner John Mara theoretically could step in and ensure Schoen holds onto Barkley, a fan favorite, for at least one more season. Otherwise, Barkley and the Giants parting ways this winter could be what's best for both parties.
