Joe Rondone/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK

The New York Giants are getting one of their top offensive weapons back for Sunday Night Football. Running back Saquon Barkley is active for the Week 6 matchup against the Buffalo Bills.

The team provided the update prior to Sunday’s kickoff. The Giants enter the game with a 1-4 record.

Barkley suffered an ankle injury in New York’s Week 2 comeback victory over the Arizona Cardinals. He has not played since.

The veteran running back accounted for 63 rushing yards, 29 receiving yards and two total touchdowns in the win. The Giants trailed 20-0 at halftime and were down 28-7 in the second half before mounting the comeback.

Barkley’s only other appearance this season came in the Week 1 blowout loss to the Dallas Cowboys. He rushed for 51 yards and accounted for 12 receiving yards in the 40-0 defeat.

Saquon Barkley suffered ‘ordinary’ ankle sprain in Week 2

Barkley’s availability for New York is huge, as the team remains winless since the Week 2 comeback against Arizona. The Giants need some sort of spark to try and get the season moving in a more positive direction

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Barkley underwent an MRI after the injury, which revealed that he suffered an “ordinary” ankle sprain. The running back exited the game with just 1:08 remaining in the fourth quarter after falling awkwardly on a second-down run.

At that time, Barkley was listed as “out” for the next three games. So, his return fits the initial timeline.

Barkley missed New York’s games against the San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Miami Dolphins, all lopsided losses. The Giants dropped all three games by double-digits and never scored more than 16 points in a single contest.

With Barkley off the field, quarterback Daniel Jones is the team’s leading rusher with 197 yards and a touchdown. Despite missing three games, Barkley still ranks second at 114 yards and a score.
