Jaguars trade Gardner Minshew to Eagles for conditional sixth-round pick

It appears the Jacksonville Jaguars have fully committed to Trevor Lawrence as their quarterback of the future.

The Jaguars traded Gardner Minshew to the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The pick could turn to a fifth-round selection if Minshew plays in 50% of plays in three games this season.

Minshew had been in a competition with Lawrence for Jacksonville's starting job throughout the summer. However, the Jags named Lawrence their starter earlier this week, and they still have C.J. Beathard and Jake Luton on the roster, making Minshew expendable.

"Minshew Mania" had taken over Jacksonville during the quarterback's rookie season in 2019, as he went 6-6, throwing for more than 3,200 yards and 21 touchdowns. Last season, however, the 25-year-old ended up being benched.

In two seasons with the Jags, Minshew went 7-13, completing 62.9% of his passes for 5,530 yards and 37 touchdowns against 11 interceptions.

To make room for Minshew on the roster, the Eagles released Nick Mullens, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Jalen Hurts is slated to be Philly's starter this season, and veteran Joe Flacco is still on the roster as a backup.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman believes in having as many serviceable quarterbacks as possible, and adding Minshew gives Philly another option should Hurts struggle out of the gate.

Minshew has proved to be a capable quarterback who can move an offense. His assets will be valuable for the Eagles down the stretch.
