Jerry Jones hints Cowboys will try to extend Dak Prescott this offseason

Dak Prescott's phenomenal play this season has landed him in the Most Valuable Player conversation, so it wouldn't be shocking if the Dallas Cowboys rewarded the quarterback with a massive contract extension.

On Tuesday, Dallas owner Jerry Jones indicated he's confident that both parties will agree to a new deal this offseason.

"Don't pay any attention to discussion. It's meaningless. The only thing that is factual here is what I decide and what we decide as a team and what Dak decides," Jones told KRLD-FM in Dallas. "We know exactly where we are on the contract, years left on the contract and we should be, and are, about as close on that type of communication. The timing on it remains to be seen."

Prescott has two years remaining on a four-year, $160M deal, which includes an out in 2024 ($61.915M in dead cap) and a no-tag clause. Spotrac estimates his market value is a four-year deal worth $47.5M annually, sixth among QBs.

This might dissuade the Cowboys. They must save cap space for stars who are in line for extensions, including edge-rusher Micah Parsons and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. Spotrac projects Dallas will be $13.567M over the cap in 2024.

However, Prescott is one reason Dallas (10-3) is a Super Bowl contender. He ranks first in the league in passing TDs (28), second in QBR (74.6) and fourth in passing yards (3,505).

Despite the cap concerns, the Cowboys should find a way to pay the QB. The 30-year-old is still in his prime and could help the team win its sixth championship.
