Larry Fitzgerald still hasn't told Cardinals if he wants to play or retire

The song remaines the same regarding future Hall of Fame wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald and the Arizona Cardinals this offseason. Fitzgerald, who joined the Cardinals via the 2004 NFL Draft and turns 38 years old in August, is a free agent and hasn't yet told those in charge of the only pro football home he's known if he's going to retire or attempt to play another season.

According to Darren Urban of the team’s website, nothing about Fitzgerald's status has changed one week ahead of the upcoming draft.

The Cardinals added former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green in free agency, presumably to serve as Fitzgerald's replacement. Fitzgerald, meanwhile, showed in 2020 he can still contribute for a contender when he tallied 54 receptions for 409 yards and a touchdown.

"He didn’t drop a pass this season, but neither did he break any tackles," Pro Football Focus notes. "Fitzgerald also produced a career-low 59.6 PFF grade. If he wants to keep playing, there is a role for him — albeit minor — in the NFL."

Rumors have linked Fitzgerald with the reigning Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he could play alongside buddy Tom Brady and once again work under former Arizona head coach Bruce Arians. While Fitzgerald has said in older interviews that he doesn't envision himself ever playing for a different team, he could understandably pursue a Super Bowl ring with the Buccaneers for a single campaign.
