NFL conducting gambling-related investigation into Colts player

A member of the Indianapolis Colts is under investigation by the NFL for gambling allegations.

According to a report from Matt Rybaltowski of SportsHandle.com, the player in question, who's since been identified as cornerback Isaiah Rodgers, per Sports Illustrated's Destin Adams, is believed to have placed bets on the Colts.

“While the new allegations around the Colts appear to be ‘isolated to one player,’ there is evidence the Colts player placed hundreds of wagers, the source told Sports Handle on the condition of anonymity,” Rybaltowski wrote.

Sports Handle is reporting that Rodgers placed the bets through an account owned by an acquaintance in 2022 and into 2023. The team issued a statement on Monday afternoon stating, "We are aware of the NFL's investigation and will have no further comment at this time."

The news comes a little over six weeks after the league suspended five players, including four from the Detroit Lions, for violating the NFL’s gambling policy, which forbids players from engaging in any form of gambling or sports betting in any team-owned or NFL facility or betting on any NFL-related events including practices, games, the NFL Combine and NFL Draft.

NFL players are allowed to gamble on sports other than football, however.

Quintez Cephus, C.J. Moore and Shaka Toney were suspended indefinitely. They can apply for reinstatement after the 2023 NFL season ends. Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill were suspended six games each for betting on non-NFL games from an NFL facility.

They both can participate in all offseason team activities and the preseason until their suspension becomes official Aug. 29, the deadline for teams to make final roster cuts.

The Athletic reported on May 26 that the NFL is also investigating a fifth Lions player for violating the league’s gambling policy.
