NFL Playoffs 49ers vs. Eagles: Wiesguy's 2 Picks and a Prop

As the season evolved, these were decidedly the two best teams in the NFC. Philadelphia was that early and San Francisco got there late.

Last week, the Eagles definitely had the easier time. The outcome was never in doubt against the Giants while the 49ers found themselves in a slugfest against the Cowboys.

These teams did not play this season. The last time they were on the field together was September 2021, a win by San Francisco.

San Francisco 49ers vs Philadelphia Eagles
Sunday, January 29, 2023
3:00 PM ET
Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Spread: Philadelphia Eagles -2.5
Total: 46.5

This spread is basically saying these teams are even and that Philly gets the nod for being at home. That makes sense. The total is suggesting modest scoring too...seems reasonable.

Spread Pick: San Francisco +2.5

These are two really good teams in all phases of the game. I am leaning to the S.F. side of things because I trust the game planning more on that side. If the weather is really poor they can ground and pound as well as any team in the league. Quarterback Brock Purdy is just a rookie but it is not like Jalen Hurts has a deep playoff resume. Both teams have explosive receivers that can turn a simple play into something big. Overall, there is more to like about SF. The margins are thin so why not take the points.

Total Pick: Under 46.5

Both of these teams want to run the ball and limit mistakes. That generally means keeping the clock moving. Both definitely have some playmakers like receivers Deebo Samuel, and AJ Brown, but the defenses are so sound I would not expect too many shots down the field. This is probably a field goal game and as long as it is close there will be plenty of play that is all about field position. This one looks like 23-20 to me.

Prop Pick:  Kenneth Gainwell Over 1.5 receptions

Gainwell is a home run hitter. He was awesome last week against the Giants and you have to think that has earned him some extra playing time this week too. Look for him to be keyed on in the running game but a little less so in the passing game by the 49ers. His ability in space makes him a natural for some screens after those inevitable SF sacks if Hurts. The Eagles can catch the 49ers a little off guard with a slightly different game plan this week.
