Patrick Mahomes discusses pursuing 'legendary' Super Bowl achievement

Less than 24 hours after Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes guided the club to a third Super Bowl title in four years and a second-straight championship, he made it known he wants the Chiefs to become the first franchise in history to win three consecutive Super Bowls.

"It [would be] legendary,'' Mahomes said during a Monday news conference about a possible three-peat, per Adam Teicher of ESPN. "No one's ever done it and we knew it's legendary to win back-to-back. I think eight other teams have done it. We had heard it all week. We had talked to the guys [who had gone back-to-back] about it and we felt like we had the best opportunity that we had ever had to go out there and do that. We've got to continue to play our best football. We'll celebrate these next few weeks and then we'll get right back at it.''

Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports mentioned that the Chiefs became the ninth team to repeat as Super Bowl champions (the Pittsburgh Steelers did it twice). Tom Brady and the New England Patriots last accomplished the feat by winning Super Bowl XXXVIII in February 2004 and Super Bowl XXXIX the following year.

Mahomes, now a three-time Super Bowl Most Valuable Player, isn't shy about the fact that Brady's résumé gives him "something to strive for every single day." The 46-year-old widely viewed as the G.O.A.T. is a seven-time Super Bowl champion and five-time Super Bowl MVP.

All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce suggested shortly after Sunday's 25-22 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers that he's returning for at least one more season because he wants "that three-peat." Head coach Andy Reid confirmed Monday he's also giving Kansas City at least one more year of service.

"I know how hard these guys work," Mahomes added about the Chiefs. "I know how hard these guys get after it. I know how hard the coaches work. I believe we're the hardest working team in the NFL and for all of that hard work to pay off...To be able to have our stamp on this great NFL history is something that I'll never take for granted.''

As of Monday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the Chiefs second among the betting favorites at +650 odds to win Super Bowl LIX next February. The 49ers topped the list at +550 odds.
