During a one-on-one interview with Missi Matthews of Steelers.com, Pittsburgh Steelers safety DeShon Elliott revealed that Patrick Queen recruited him to sign with the Steelers. Queen gave his former Raven teammate a call and said he put in a good word to general manager Omar Khan.
“He was like, do you wanna become a Steeler? I was like, what do you mean? He goes, I was talking to the GM, do you wanna become a Steeler? I was like freak yeah bro, hell yeah, I’ll come play with you; what are you talking about? And so the next day, made it happen,” Elliott said.
The Steelers and Ravens mirror each as organizations from the top-down, so it’s not surprising that the Steelers went after Queen and Elliott. It might just be a coincidence that they played in Baltimore, but Queen and Elliott definitely fit the Steelers mold. They’re the type of players that they love to have on defense.
Elliott believes he was destined to be in the Black and Gold, as the first little league team that he played for as a kid was the Steelers.
“I think that I was destined to be here ’cause my first team when I was a kid playing in Dallas, I played for the Steelers,” Elliott said. “So it’s just something that my dad’s been sending me pictures, my mom sent me pictures. It’s like, ‘Look at you and your dad, because my dad used to coach me. It’s just something cool to say I did. I’m very excited to be here. I think I was meant to be in this organization.”
After Queen signed with the Steelers, he heard some slights back from Baltimore, and his former teammates threw playful banter his way. It wasn’t the same situation for Elliott, as he was on the Miami Dolphins last year and hasn’t been a Raven since 2021.
But once it comes time to get onto the football field, Queen wants to be known not as someone who was a former Raven but as the villain of that rivalry.
“It’s going to be weird, but I want to be that villain. I want to be that guy. I’m looking to do some stuff to them,” Queen said.
Queen got a lot of flak on social media from Ravens fans, however. He made sure to address the situation.
“Honestly bruh y’all can stfu now. It’s not even that deep for us players until game week and y’all can’t understand the fact it wasn’t up to me,” Queen wrote on X about signing with the Steelers. “I gave y’all everything I had now when it’s time for me to do what I need y’all hurt bout everything I say. Go touch some grass and fill the void in y’all life. To ones still showing love even with the switch this not to y’all.”
