Patriots name Joe Judge new quarterbacks coach

Former New York Giants head coach Joe Judge is the quarterbacks coach of the New England Patriots, the team announced.

Judge, 40, was hired by the Patriots as an offensive assistant in February, but his position as quarterbacks coach wasn't revealed until Thursday, a couple of days after rookies reported to training camp on Tuesday. In the new role, Judge will be tasked with the development of Mac Jones, a 2021 first-round pick who earned Pro Bowl honors as a rookie with 22 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions.

The Patriots also used a 2022 fourth-round selection to add former Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe.

Judge previously spent eight seasons as an assistant with the Patriots, spending the majority of his tenure working on special teams before coaching wide receivers in his final season of the tenure. He then spent two seasons as head coach of the Giants, leading the team to a 10-23 record.

Giants quarterback Daniel Jones began his career with 24 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions in his rookie year, but threw 21 touchdown passes and 17 interceptions in two seasons with Judge at the helm.

New England also announced Thursday that former Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia will serve as the team's offensive line coach.
