Of the Las Vegas Raiders' 18 reserve/contract signees last month, cornerback Sam Webb is one the team is probably most familiar with.
Webb's NFL career began with Las Vegas back in 2022 when the club signed him as an undrafted free agent. He would go on to be a vital piece of the Raiders' defense in his rookie season, appearing in all 17 games and even making three starts. The bulk of his defensive contributions spanned from Week 11 to Week 14, a stretch in which Las Vegas went 3-1, including a three-game win streak.
Webb finished his rookie campaign with 36 combined tackles, three passes defensed, and a forced fumble. Despite a promising first season, Las Vegas waived the young cornerback as part of roster cuts back in August and signed him to the practice squad the very next day. He was then signed by the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 13.
The Panthers played Webb in just one game this past season. He played just 10 defensive snaps and 12 special teams snaps.
Las Vegas wanted Webb back for at least the time being, as the club signed him to a one-year, $985,000 reserve/future contract in January.
Webb knows the Raiders, and the Raiders know him. He thrived with them once before and he could very well do so again.
The 25-year-old cornerback is still entering just his third NFL season. Being back in Las Vegas may be just what Webb needs to get back to the player he showed glimpses of his rookie year. If he does reach that level again, he could be a solid rotational player in the team's secondary in 2024.
From February 27 to March 4, 2024, the NFL Scouting Combine will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.
The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently hold the No. 13 overall pick.
