Ravens LB Vince Biegel suffers torn Achilles; career in jeopardy?

The Baltimore Ravens announced back on May 16 that they had signed veteran outside linebacker Vince Biegel via what was later reported to be a one-year, $1 million deal.

Biegel won't get a chance to feature for the Ravens this fall, and it's possible he'll never play another snap for them or for any other team moving forward.

Per Ryan Mink of the Ravens' website, Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh confirmed while speaking with reporters that Biegel suffered a torn Achilles during Thursday's practice session. As Charean Williams noted for Pro Football Talk, Biegel tore his opposite Achilles tendon in the summer of 2020 while with the Miami Dolphins. His history suggests this could be a career-threatening setback.

"Just in a 2-on-2 drill and he just leaned the wrong way," Harbaugh said of what caused Biegel's latest issue. "For Vince, he's a veteran guy, it's his third season-ending injury in three years — New Orleans, Miami and now here. That's really unfortunate for him, and we'll be with him for that journey."

Biegel played in just five games for the Dolphins last season and recorded two total tackles. According to Mink, the 29-year-old had become a strong candidate to make Baltimore's final 53-man roster later this month.

"Vince was fighting to make the team," Harbaugh added during his comments. "He would have had a great chance to make it, because he's just a solid, tough, talented guy who does everything exactly right as hard as he can."

Kevin Oestreicher of Ravens Wire/USA Today hinted the Ravens will shop for a replacement via free agency or a trade.
