Report: Browns 'not expected to be interested' in free-agent QB Cam Newton

It was reported Thursday morning that the Cleveland Browns were bringing in A.J. McCarron and Josh Rosen for workouts, as the team attempts to tidy up their messy quarterbacks room. Despite 2015 MVP Cam Newton still being on the market as another potential option, Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot has reported that the team isn't interested.

While the Browns apparently don't plan to pursue "Superman," another name to watch, per Cabot, is Garrett Gilbert. Like McCarron and Rosen, Gilbert has primarily been a seldom-used backup in recent years.

A sixth-round pick in 2014, Gilbert made his NFL debut in 2018 and has appeared in games for four teams — including a career-high five contests with Cleveland in 2019 — over the last four years. In eight career games (two starts), the 31-year-old has gone 43-for-75 for 477 passing yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Of course, if embattled quarterback Deshaun Watson is able to avoid a suspension for his alleged dozens of instances of sexual misconduct, then the Browns will have their starting quarterback for the 2022 season. While it's been reported that a decision on a possible punishment may not be coming in the near future, Cleveland is apparently "bracing" for an eight-game suspension.
