Report: Falcons asked teams for first-round pick for Julio Jones before draft

The Atlanta Falcons reportedly initially put a high price tag on star wide receiver Julio Jones.

According to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, the Falcons were seeking a first-round pick for Jones ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft. Breer says Atlanta couldn't find a trade partner because "the climate in the NFL right now isn't conducive to getting value for an expensive 32-year-old receiver."

Breer also notes that, at this point, the Falcons might be willing to trade Jones for a second-round pick.

Atlanta is looking to clear cap space because they have just $357,027 in room and cannot sign draft picks until they free up more space. Jones is on the chopping block because he is guaranteed $15.3 million for the 2021 season.

The New England Patriots have been heavily linked to the seven-time Pro Bowler thus far. Bill Belichick's squad has reportedly had internal discussions about a trade and NBC Sports Boston's Michael Holley reports Jones wants to play with Cam Newton in New England.

Former Patriots executive Mike Lombardi also said he believes the club "will be in" the mix for Jones. However, ESPN lists the Indianapolis Colts, San Francisco 49ers and Las Vegas Raiders as other potential landing spots for the Alabama product.
