Report: Giants' Joe Schoen 'probably would like to be done' with WR Kadarius Toney

There is yet another indication that the New York Giants would move on from wide receiver Kadarius Toney sooner than later if possible.

Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com wrote Wednesday that first-year Giants general manager Joe Schoen "probably would like to be done with" Toney by next Tuesday's NFL trade deadline. As ESPN's Jordan Raanan pointed out earlier in the week, though, it's unlikely any team would give New York a noteworthy asset for the 2021 first-round draft pick who has been limited to 12 games since Week 1 last year because of numerous injury woes.

Specifically, Toney has appeared in only two contests during the ongoing campaign and is currently sidelined due to lingering hamstring issues. Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper mentioned that Toney didn't practice Wednesday and seemingly won't be available when the 6-1 Giants play at the 4-3 Seattle Seahawks this Sunday.

"It’s hard to imagine even a wide receiver-desperate team trading anything of substance for Toney, who missed seven of 17 games last year and has missed five of seven so far this year. So he has missed half of his 24 possible NFL games to date," Slater added. "It’s possible Schoen could try to trade Toney next offseason, with two years left on his manageable rookie contract (fully guaranteed salaries of $1.9 million and $2.5 million). Schoen would have to eat $3.6 million in dead money (remaining prorated signing bonus) for a Toney trade next offseason. Toney’s salary cap hit if he sticks around for 2023 would be $3.7 million. So there would be some savings, though not a ton."

Across his 14 regular-season games, Toney has recorded 41 catches for 420 yards and zero touchdowns.

Schoen and Coach of the Year candidate Brian Daboll weren't with the organization when former general manager Dave Gettleman drafted Toney 20th overall in 2021. Logic suggests neither Schoen nor Daboll would lose sleep over shopping the receiver when the new league year opens in March 2023 unless Toney earns his keep over the second half of this season.
