Report: Roger Goodell pushed for Washington name and logo change

On the same day that the Washington Redskins announced the retirement of the club's controversial name and logo, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported NFL commissioner Roger Goodell pushed owner Dan Snyder into making the call.

Florio wrote that Goodell pressured Snyder "very hard" after FedEx, which has its name attached to the club's stadium, requested the removal of the nickname and logo, and after Amazon pulled team-related merchandise that features the name and/or logo.

Washington tweeted that Snyder and head coach Ron Rivera, who was hired by the franchise in January, "are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition-rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans, and community for the next 100 years."

While a timeline for the decision is unknown, there are reports a new name and logo will be introduced before Washington opens training camp on July 28.
