Saints cut wide receiver after disastrous preseason outing

Bryan Edwards took two touchdowns off the board in New Orleans' Week 2 preseason game and on Tuesday, the Saints made sure he won't do it again.

The decision to cut Edwards is unsurprising after his stock took a major hit in Sunday's game against the Chargers. Not only was he called for offensive pass interference on two plays the Saints scored a touchdown (on the same drive, no less), but he also failed to haul in a catch in the endzone and was held without a reception on four targets.

He finishes his preseason in New Orleans with three receptions on nine targets for 37 yards.

Edwards was a member of the Raiders' horrid 2020 draft class. The team's two first-round picks, Henry Ruggs III and Damon Arnette were out of the league by the end of the 2021 season. Cornerback Amik Robertson was the team's last of its seven draft picks (139th overall) and is the only member of the class to still be on the team.

Edward could latch on somewhere else but it made sense for New Orleans to cut bait. Not only are the Saints set at the top of the depth chart with Chris Olave, Michael Thomas and Rashid Shaheed, but they also have solid depth with preseason standouts including Shaq Davis and A.T. Perry. Davis leads the team in yards per reception (16.6) through two preseason games while Perry leads in receptions (nine) and yards (92).

It makes more sense to give those guys, or others vying for a roster spot, an extended look in the preseason finale instead of giving snaps to Edwards when he torpedoed his opportunity against the Chargers.

It also allows Edwards a chance to get a head start on finding his next home. He showed flashes that he could be a solid contributor in 2021 with Las Vegas when he had 34 receptions, 571 yards and three touchdowns. Some team might take a flier on him.

As long as it doesn't look at Sunday's game film first.
