Should the Packers sign veteran WR Mohamed Sanu?

The Green Bay Packers are not short on veterans, especially when it comes to their wide receivers room.

Despite drafting three rookies in April's draft (Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs and Samori Toure), the team also has three receivers that are going into their fifth season or later. Randall Cobb is going into his 12th-career season. Sammy Watkins is entering his ninth-career season. Allen Lazard is entering his fifth-career season. So, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has a great balance of experience and youth. But with the losses of five-time Pro Bowler Davante Adams and deep threat Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Green Bay could still be looking for another veteran to help them out. But, it would have to be a veteran that has experience playing for LaFleur. That is where Mohamed Sanu comes in.

Sanu has played in the NFL for a decade with five different teams. The former Rutgers star has 435 receptions for 4,871 yards and 27 receiving touchdowns in his career. For the majority of his career, Sanu has been a No. 3 or sometimes a No. 2 receiver. His best season came in 2018 when he caught 66 passes for a career-best 838 yards and four touchdowns.

His history with LaFleur goes back to 2016 in Atlanta. LaFleur was the QB coach and Sanu was the team's No. 2 receiver. That season, Sanu caught 59 passes (third-best of his career) for 653 yards (fourth-best of his career) and four touchdowns (tied for second-best of his career). Atlanta went on to appear in the Super Bowl that season.

Sanu will turn 33 years of age in August. He would not be the team's No. 1 receiver. But his experience could certainly be very helpful for the three rookies, along with second-year receiver Amari Rodgers. His knowledge of Matt LaFleur's offense would make him a steady option for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The Packers have roughly $17M in cap room. A one-year deal makes the most sense here.
