Should the Raiders trade disappointing Clelin Ferrell?

The Raiders should consider trading fourth-year defensive end Clelin Ferrell, a first-round draft pick in 2019 who isn't tapping into his full potential.

In four seasons, Ferrell has eight sacks. Meanwhile, fellow defensive end Maxx Crosby, a fourth-round pick in 2019, has developed into an elite pass-rusher. This season, Crosby stands among the league leaders in sacks (six).

In March, Las Vegas signed four-time Pro Bowl defensive end Chandler Jones. Consequently, Ferrell's playing time has decreased. In his first two seasons, he played 65 percent of defensive snaps. Since 2021, he's played on 29 percent defensive snaps.

A trade of Ferrell could help the Raiders' secondary, which struggles to cover elite playmakers. In a 30-29 loss to the Chiefs, tight end Travis Kelce had four touchdown receptions.

Kelce is not the only receiver who has exploited the Raiders, who are 27th in scoring defense through five games, surrendering 26 points per contest, more than the league average.

Injuries compound the issues in the secondary. Starting cornerback Nate Hobbs fractured his left hand against the Chiefs and is questionable Sunday against the Texans.

The Browns, Lions and Cardinals must strengthen their defensive lines. Perhaps the Raiders could pry secondary help from them in a trade for Ferrell.
