Steelers interview three more candidates for GM job

The list of candidates for the Steelers' general manager position keeps getting longer.

Pittsburgh interviewed three more people for the opening this week, the team announced on Saturday. The list is made of entirely external candidates.

One of the more tenured candidates for the position is Joe Hortiz, director of player personnel for the Ravens. He interviewed for the Giants' general manager position but saw it go instead to Joe Schoen. Hortiz recently finished his 24th season in the Baltimore organization, rising his way all the way up from when he was hired as a scout in 1998.

Also on the list is Ran Carthon, director of pro personnel for the 49ers. He began his front-office career as a scout for the Falcons in 2008, then was named director of player personnel for the Rams in 2012 before joining San Francisco in 2017. He would be the sixth Black general manager in the NFL, which at five is already a league record.

The final candidate announced Saturday is Andy Weidl, who currently works as the vice president of player personnel for the Eagles. He actually began his career with the Steelers, serving as a player-personnel assistant from 1998-1999. He then spent the next five years with the Saints before jumping to the Ravens for 11 years. He joined Philadelphia in 2016 and assumed his current role in 2019.

The Steelers have interviewed more than a dozen people for the general manager job now, including John Wojciechowski of the Packers, Morocco Brown of the Colts, ESPN's Louis Riddick and a number of other internal and external candidates.
