Three hottest seats on the Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills looked like Super Bowl favorites for much of the 2022 season, but the wheels fell off in the AFC divisional round against the Cincinnati Bengals. The lack of a competent run game exposed the Bills as a beatable one-dimensional team when forced to rely solely on quarterback Josh Allen. The team’s championship aspirations will be just as high next year, and plenty of jobs could potentially be at stake next season.

Here are the three Bills with the hottest seats in 2023.

1. Ken Dorsey, offensive coordinator

Buffalo had the No. 2 overall offense in the NFL in 2022, but it was nowhere to be found in the team’s 27-10 loss to the Bengals in the playoffs.

Sure, Allen threw for 264 yards and ran for a touchdown, but Dorsey failed to call any successful run plays, and when Allen was forced to throw the ball, Dorsey had a hard time putting him in position to find any success against Cincinnati’s 23rd-ranked pass defense.

Buffalo is essentially in “Super Bowl or bust” mode for as long as Allen is their QB, and if Dorsey has many more clunkers like he did in the playoffs, the Bills may be looking for another coordinator who can maximize Allen’s prime years.

2. Tre’Davious White, CB

When the Bills signed White to a four-year, $70 million contract extension in 2020, they likely thought they’d get more than 17 combined games from him over the first two years of that contract.

There’s no question when healthy White is one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL but $16.23 million is an awfully high cap hit for a player who’s played just 937 combined defensive snaps over the last two seasons. Buffalo got plenty of production from Kaiir Elam, Taron Johnson, Dane Jackson and Christian Benford in 2022, and the team could look for White’s replacement through the draft or free agency if it believes White may be in for another injury-plagued season in 2023.

3. Stefon Diggs, WR

Diggs is unquestionably a top-10 receiver. But aside from having the second highest cap hit on the team, the Bills don’t have much else to show for his three seasons in Buffalo. He drew some heat for storming out of the locker room early following the loss to the Bengals, and his brother Trevon has been campaigning hard for his brother to join him in Dallas.

If Buffalo has another disappointing playoff exit next season, the Bills may decide it’s time to cut bait with Diggs and trade him somewhere he’ll no longer be a distraction to a team very much in its Super Bowl window.
