Undrafted rookie QB to make Giants, NFL history Week 10 vs. Cowboys

Undrafted rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito will make both New York Giants and NFL history when he starts the team's Week 10 clash against the Dallas Cowboys.

Per ESPN's Jordan Raanan, this will be the first time in the common draft era (since 1970) that the G-Men are starting an undrafted rookie in a non-strike contest. The 25-year-old DeVito will also become the 10th undrafted rookie to start an NFL game since 2010 and second this year, joining Tyson Bagent of the Chicago Bears.

Bagent has started each of the past three games for Chicago with starter Justin Fields nursing a thumb injury.

Prior to Wednesday, DeVito was the only healthy signal-caller on New York's roster.

Starter Daniel Jones made his return to action in the Giants' Week 9 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders after missing the previous three games with a neck injury. Danny Dimes departed early in the second quarter after suffering a torn ACL.

Tyrod Taylor had been serving as the backup and made three starts this fall but was placed on injured reserve last Saturday due to a rib cage injury.

New York signed 33-year-old Matt Barkley to the practice squad on Oct. 31, but he wasn't active in Week 9. Barkley hasn't played in an NFL game since 2020 but was signed to the active roster on Wednesday and will back up DeVito against the Cowboys.

DeVito has gone 17-for-27 for 174 passing yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for a 62.9 quarterback rating in his first two career games after being thrust into unexpected duty Week 9 vs. the New York Jets and Week 10 against the Las Vegas Raiders. The Syracuse and Illinois product has added eight rushing attempts for 29 yards and one touchdown and has been sacked eight times for 38 yards.

DeVito has had good tests to start his professional career against the likes of Pro Bowl linebacker C.J. Mosley and All-Pro defensive lineman Quinnen Williams of the Jets and Pro Bowl edge rusher Maxx Crosby of the Raiders, but his toughest task may await on Sunday.

Despite losing Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs early in the year to a season-ending torn ACL, Dallas still has one of the best defenses in the league. The Cowboys are being led by former Defensive Rookie of the Year linebacker Micah Parsons and rising youngster DaRon Bland, who's taken over as a starting cornerback with Diggs on injured reserve.

Bland has a team high four interceptions this season and has a league best three interception returns for touchdowns.

Bland had his first pick-six of the campaign (and of his career) off of Jones in the Cowboys' 40-0 domination of the Giants in Week 1.

Fans in Big D are salivating over the chance to see their defense tee off on their rivals' ailing offense and historically inexperienced rookie quarterback.
