Giants rookie QB could make NFL history in Week 10 vs. Cowboys

New York Giants undrafted rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito could help the NFL make history in Week 10 during his team's game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Right now, DeVito is the only healthy signal-caller on the Giants roster.

Starting quarterback Daniel Jones made his return to action in New York's Week 9 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders after missing the previous three games with a neck injury. Jones departed early in the second quarter with a knee injury however and the team fears that he may have suffered a torn ACL.

Backup Tyrod Taylor was placed on injured reserve on Saturday due to a rib ailment.

The Giants signed 33-year-old Matt Barkley to the practice squad on Oct. 31, but he wasn't active in Week 9. Barkley hasn't played in an NFL contest since 2020 and hasn't started a game since 2018.

DeVito has combined to go 17-for-27 for 174 passing yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for a 62.9 quarterback rating over his first two career games in Week 9 and 10. He's added eight carries for 29 yards and one touchdown and has been sacked eight times for 38 yards.

The other nine rookie quarterbacks to have made starts this year have all been under center for various reasons.

Carolina Panthers No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young, Houston Texans No. 2 pick C.J. Stroud and Indianapolis Colts No. 4 selection Anthony Richardson all earned their respective teams' starting gigs over the summer.

Young has experienced significant growing pains with a 1-6 record and seven interceptions thus far, while Richardson was lost for the season following a shoulder injury in Week 5.

Stroud, meanwhile, has been superb, ranking second in the NFL in yards per completion (13.1), third in passing yards per game (283.8), fourth in passer rating (102.9) and seventh in both passing yards (2,270) and passing touchdowns (14).

Will Levis and Aidan O'Connell have both recently taken over for injured (Ryan Tannehill) or ineffective (Jimmy Garoppolo) veteran signal-callers with the Tennessee Titans and Las Vegas Raiders, respectively. Both Levis and O'Connell have thrived thus far, going a combined 2-2 with four touchdowns (all from Levis) and two interceptions in their two starts apiece.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson made one start for the Cleveland Browns in Week 4 when starter Deshaun Watson was injured but struggled mightily, going 19-of-36 for 121 passing yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions in a loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Watson is now back under center and helped Cleveland in a dominant win over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 9.

With former first-round pick Justin Fields still recovering from a thumb injury, undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent has started the past three games for the Chicago Bears. Bagent has gone 1-2 since taking over and has posted three passing touchdowns with five interceptions.

Joshua Dobbs started the first eight games for the Arizona Cardinals this year but was moved to the Minnesota Vikings hours before last Tuesday's trade deadline. Clayton Tune made his first career start on Sunday, but it didn't go well, as he finished 11-for-20 for passing 58 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions in a 27-0 loss against the Browns.

Two-time Pro Bowler Kyler Murray could make his return from last season's torn ACL when the Cardinals host the Atlanta Falcons in Week 10.

The Vikings lost quarterback Kirk Cousins to a season-ending torn Achilles recently, paving the way for fifth-round pick Jaren Hall to make his debut in Week 9. The outing was short-lived, however, as the 25-year-old suffered a concussion in the first quarter, leading the newly acquired Dobbs to enter and eventually lead Minnesota to a 31-28 win against the Falcons.
