Undrafted WR named Chiefs' most surprising player

The Chiefs somewhat rebuilt their wide receiver room this offseason after leading the NFL in dropped passes (26) a year ago.

Among the new faces that highlight quarterback Patrick Mahomes' arsenal are veteran Marquise Brown and 2024 first-round rookie Xavier Worthy.

Both players should be improvements at the position this season, but someone else was named the most surprising player at OTAs and mandatory minicamp: Wide receiver Nikko Remigio.

"Remigio — in part because of Xavier Worthy's injured hamstring — received a good run with the first unit during OTAs and minicamp, and he made the most of his opportunities," ESPN's Adam Teicher writes. "One edge Remigio might have in making the roster is his ability as a kickoff returner."

Remigio joined Kansas City as an undrafted rookie following the 2023 NFL Draft, but his season ended before it started, as the team placed him on injured reserve in August.

The Chiefs are hoping he can become their latest diamond in the rough. The 24-year-old registered 74 catches for 852 yards and six touchdowns while rushing for 42 yards and two TDs during his lone year (2022) at Fresno State.

Remigio may have impressed on Kansas City's 90-man roster thus far, but his biggest challenge will be finding his way onto the 53-man roster by summer's end.

He must compete with Brown, Worthy, Rashee Rice, Justin Watson, Skyy Moore and Kadarius Toney for a spot.

However, Remigio may be able to carve out a spot on the roster as a returner, which is more important with this year's rule change. He was a dynamic punt returner in college, returning 13 punts for 259 yards and two touchdowns.

Remigio might be a long shot, but if he continues to impress when the pads come on, he could finally get his shot at the next level.
